COSCO Expands Heavylift Fleet with New MPP Orders in China

COSCO Shipping Specialised Carriers is accelerating the expansion of its heavylift and multipurpose fleet, placing a newbuilding order in China as global demand for offshore wind logistics continues to strengthen.

In a filing to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the COSCO Shipping subsidiary confirmed it has ordered four 40,000 dwt multipurpose (MPP) vessels at CSSC’s Chengxi Shipyard, committing a total investment of approximately $213m. Each vessel will be equipped with heavy-lift cranes, enabling the transport of oversized and high-value project cargo.

Deliveries Timed to Offshore Wind Growth

According to the disclosure, the first ship is scheduled for delivery in June 2028, with the remaining three vessels to be handed over progressively by the end of February 2029.

The company said the timing of the order reflects a positive long-term outlook for wind power logistics, particularly as offshore wind projects move further from shore and require the transport of larger, heavier and more complex turbine components.

Strengthening Project and Sea Freight Capabilities

COSCO Shipping Specialised Carriers has built a strong position in the carriage of wind-related cargoes, including blades, towers, nacelles and foundations. The newbuildings are intended to enhance the lifting capacity, operational flexibility and cargo-handling efficiency of its multipurpose fleet.

By adding modern MPP tonnage, the company aims to better serve sea freight demand for renewable energy projects, while also maintaining versatility across other project cargo segments such as industrial equipment, infrastructure modules and breakbulk shipments.

Strategic Investment in Energy Transition Logistics

The order underscores COSCO’s broader strategy to align fleet development with the global energy transition. As offshore wind farms grow in scale and complexity, shipowners with advanced heavylift capabilities are increasingly well-positioned to capture long-term cargo demand.

COSCO said the latest investment will help ensure its fleet remains competitive in specialised shipping markets, supporting both renewable energy supply chains and wider project cargo trades in the years ahead.
