COSCO Launches International Maritime Future Technologies Innovation Centre

China’s COSCO Shipping, the world’s largest shipowner, has teamed up with Lloyd’s Register (LR), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the University of Southampton to establish the International Maritime Future Technologies Innovation Centre — a new global platform dedicated to advancing low-carbon technologies, intelligent ship systems, and digital transformation in the shipping industry.

The virtual centre will function as a hub for research, testing, and real-world application, bridging the gap between academic innovation and commercial sea freight operations. By leveraging COSCO’s global fleet data and operational expertise, the initiative aims to turn advanced research into practical solutions for green shipping and energy transition.

Driving the Next Wave of Sustainable Sea Freight

The newly launched centre focuses on decarbonisation technologies, AI-driven smart ship systems, and digital optimisation across global fleets.
Using COSCO’s extensive sea freight network, the centre will test and validate emerging innovations — from zero-emission propulsion to intelligent voyage optimisation systems — to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in daily operations.

The founding partners have also formed a Technical Committee to guide research priorities, ensure project continuity, and align the centre’s outcomes with IMO 2025 and 2030 decarbonisation goals as well as international regulatory standards.

A Joint Vision for the Future of Shipping

According to Nick Brown, CEO of Lloyd’s Register, the partnership represents a tangible step toward real-world impact:

“This partnership is about turning ambition into action. Together with our partners, we are investing in the ideas, data, and technologies that will help the maritime industry meet the challenges of the energy transition head-on and drive change that benefits both business and society.”

Experts believe the initiative will accelerate progress toward smart, efficient, and sustainable sea freight operations, reinforcing China’s growing influence in maritime innovation and global green technology development.

Outlook: Collaboration for Smarter, Greener Shipping

The International Maritime Future Technologies Innovation Centre will serve as a key research and development engine for the global shipping sector, promoting cross-border cooperation and enabling scalable deployment of clean maritime solutions.
By uniting the strengths of academia, industry, and classification, COSCO and its partners are positioning the centre as a catalyst for the next generation of energy-efficient and digitally connected vessels — a milestone in the evolution of international sea freight sustainability.
