Atlantic Bulk Carriers back for four more ultramaxes in China

Greek bulker owner Atlantic Bulk Carriers Management is accelerating its fleet renewal strategy, returning to China for a fresh round of ultramax newbuilding orders amid firm yard demand and rising interest in fuel-efficient bulk carriers.

New Four-Ship Order at Nantong Xiangyu

According to Greek broking sources, the Piraeus-based company has signed for four 63,500 dwt ultramax bulk carriers at Nantong Xiangyu Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.
Each vessel is reported to cost around $33.8 million, with deliveries scheduled for 2028.

The contract strengthens Atlantic Bulk’s relationship with the Yangtze River shipyard, which has become one of China’s most active builders in the ultramax segment.

Growing Footprint in Chinese Newbuild Market

Earlier this year, Atlantic Bulk took delivery of its first trio of Chinese-built bulkers — Desert Lion, Desert Puma, and Desert Leopard — marking its official entry into China’s newbuilding market.
The latest order signals the owner’s continued push toward younger, greener, and more efficient tonnage as global regulations tighten and charterers increasingly prefer modern vessels.

Today, Atlantic Bulk manages a fleet of around 20 supramax and ultramax bulk carriers, and the new additions will help further modernise its lineup.

Nantong Xiangyu’s Expanding Influence

Nantong Xiangyu is becoming a key player in the ultramax construction market, winning new business from a growing roster of international shipowners.
Recent milestones for the yard include:

  • First-ever order from South Korea’s Sammok Shipping
  • Entry into the newcastlemax segment through a contract with Japan’s Doun Kisen
  • Expanded shipbuilding capacity following its takeover of Jiangsu Hongqiang Ship Heavy Industry

With stronger facilities and deeper experience in bulk carrier construction, the yard is positioning itself as one of China’s most competitive options for mid-sized bulkers.
