Samsung Heavy & Evergreen Launch Advanced Remote Operation Hub
Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Evergreen have inaugurated a next-generation Samsung Remote Operation Center (SROC) in Taiwan, marking a major milestone in the transition toward shore-based vessel management and the long-term evolution of autonomous shipping technologies.
A New Era of Remote Ship Operations
Developed jointly by SHI, Evergreen, and ClassNK, the SROC enables real-time, land-based monitoring of vessel performance, machinery status, navigation systems, and safety indicators. The technology provides remote troubleshooting and predictive maintenance support designed to:
- Reduce operational downtime
- Improve decision-making speed during technical issues
- Enhance navigational safety for global sea freight operations
SHI says the center reflects a strategic shift to move more traditionally onboard tasks to controlled onshore environments, improving efficiency and lowering risk.
Evergreen Eyes Autonomous Shipping Future
Evergreen views the project as a foundational step toward full automation. Eddie Pai, Junior Vice President of the carrier’s Seafarer Training Center, stated that the new SROC “sets the groundwork for autonomous vessels and advanced remote operations,” aligning with Evergreen’s long-term digital transformation roadmap.
Proven Autonomous Navigation Performance
The new facility comes on the heels of a landmark test voyage. In September, SHI successfully completed a 10,000 km transpacific voyage using its Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS) system, installed on a 15,000 TEU Evergreen vessel traveling from Oakland to Kaohsiung.
During the journey:
- SAS executed 104 optimal route guidance commands
- Performed 224 autonomous control adjustments
- Integrated radar, GPS and multi-camera data to manage propulsion and steering without crew intervention
The system also analysed weather every three hours, automatically modifying speed and route to ensure punctual arrival and reduce fuel consumption — a key win for both sustainable shipping and global sea freight efficiency.
