DP World Expands Fujairah Port Capacity

DP World has confirmed plans to develop new container and general cargo terminals at Fujairah Port, a project that will strengthen the UAE's logistics network by providing an alternative gateway outside the Strait of Hormuz.

The development will be carried out under a 50-year concession agreement with the Fujairah Ports Authority and is expected to enhance the country's capacity for container, Ro-Ro and general cargo handling.

New Deep-Water Gateway Planned on UAE East Coast

The agreement includes the construction of two new facilities: the Al Rugaylat Container Terminal and the Dibba General Cargo Terminal on the Gulf of Oman.

According to DP World, the project is designed to create a modern deep-water port capable of accommodating the latest generation of Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) while expanding cargo handling capacity on the UAE's east coast.

Construction will be completed in phases, with the first stage expected to require approximately 24 to 30 months.

Alternative Route Beyond the Strait of Hormuz

The Fujairah expansion is expected to provide shipping lines with an additional maritime gateway that operates outside the Strait of Hormuz, an area that has experienced repeated security concerns in recent years.

Industry observers have previously reported that the UAE has been exploring infrastructure projects that diversify trade routes, including expanding oil export facilities along the Gulf of Oman coastline.

The new port facilities are expected to strengthen supply chain resilience by providing greater routing flexibility for regional and international cargo movements.

Significant Increase in Container Capacity

Once operational, the Al Rugaylat Terminal will be capable of handling up to 2.5 million TEUs annually, together with 1.7 million tonnes of general cargo and approximately 190,000 Car Equivalent Units (CEUs).

The Dibba General Cargo Terminal will contribute an additional 3.6 million tonnes of annual general cargo capacity.

The expansion will increase DP World's total container handling capacity across the UAE from 19.4 million TEUs to nearly 22 million TEUs.

Connected to Jebel Ali Logistics Network

DP World said the new terminals will be integrated with Jebel Ali Port through its inland logistics network, enabling cargo to move more efficiently between ports, logistics centres and final destinations across the UAE.

The company expects the development to reinforce Fujairah's position as an important maritime services hub while complementing the role of Jebel Ali, which remains the country's largest container gateway.

UAE Strengthens Regional Shipping Infrastructure

The expansion reflects the UAE's continued investment in maritime infrastructure to support growing regional trade volumes and improve supply chain resilience.

By adding significant container, general cargo and Ro-Ro capacity on the Gulf of Oman, the project is expected to enhance operational flexibility for shipping lines while supporting the country's long-term logistics strategy.
